Our round-the-country RV adventure
01 July 2010
The seeds of our desire to RV across the country were planted on a four week RV trip to the rockies we took with our boys in the summer of 2010. They were 8 and 10.
When Jerusha and I tent camped in our youth, we looked down our noses at RVs – “that’s not camping.” It might not be camping, but it’s a lot better than hotelling cross country.
In a hotel, the TV and the bed are your living space, and meals are taken at restaurants.
In our Tioga RV, we would pass long drives listening to Harry Potter books on tape and letting our kids playing Magic The Gathering at the dining table. We would pull into a KOA and make a simple meal on the tiny stove, then eat dinner under the stars at a wooden picnic table. We told the boys the TV in the RV was broken. It was heaven.
As we looked back at the fun we had, we realized we wanted to do something like that again. So, we hatched a plan: when Matt (our youngest) goes to college in 2020, we would take a year sabbatical together to sightsee, enjoy nature and meet up with friends.
