Empty Nesters

Our round-the-country RV adventure

Acadia National Park

20 September 2021

We enjoyed a nine-day stay in Acadia National Park on the coast of Maine.

We managed to get a spot IN Acadia by signing up months in advance. We didn’t realize that the RV park was an hour from the main island, but Schoodic Woods was a wonderful place to stay.

The spot felt fairly private and Jerusha’s favorite aspect of it was the many and varied mushrooms all over the park.

We also enjoyed the loop drive and catching the sunset overlooking the ocean. The area was so lovely Jerusha felt compelled to put on a fancy dress and take some glamor shots.

We spent a couple days at the campsite, exploring the bike and hiking trails as well as getting a work day here and there. Yes, Ken is still working part time and Jerusha had to finish her college recommendations. Ken has rigged a system that allows us (usually) to get wifi, but he has to climb up onto the roof at every site to make it work.

We made the hour drive over to Mt. Desert Island, where the main part of Acadia is located, a couple times. The parking lots and Ranger Station were absolutely packed, but we found a couple carriage trails to hike along that were not crowded at all.

The trails are open to bikes and hikers and, as all of Acadia, very dog friendly. Lego loved the walks and surprised us when she easily managed the four hour walks we took her on.

We also got a timed pass to go up Cadillac mountain one day. The view from the top was stunning. We hear it is a popular place to watch sunrise and sunset, but staying an hour away left those two options off the table.

When in Maine, one must have lobster rolls and steamers. We found good ones at a wonderful spot called Abel’s Lobster Pound where we enjoyed our lunch outdoors, and they even brought out a dog bowl for Lego!

While in Maine, we took two days away from our camper to visit friends and family. First stop was a long overdue visit to see Mark and Andrea at their house right on the water. Andrea married us 25 years ago!

After them we visited Ken’s Aunt and Uncle near Bath. We arrived on Uncle Dan’s birthday! The next day we got to see Ken’s cousin Jeff and his family, and ate their home grown YELLOW watermelon (I didn’t know that was a thing!)

Our last visit was to Jerusha’s Aunt Jane. Luckily her Aunt Susie was visiting from Oregon at the same time so we got a wonderful double visit during which they shared all sorts of stories about their childhood, parents and grandparents. Jerusha loved hearing more about her family history!

When we finally said goodbye to lovely Acadia we stopped at the home of Ken’s former business partner for the night. We had a great time catching up with Klaus and Chris. We got to see their son Max and meet his wife Katie! We even got the honor of being able to carve our names into their “visitors table”!

Lego LOVED being with us. She enjoyed the long walks, hanging out in the RV and even being in the truck. But she became very anxious anytime either of us was out of her sight and having a dog with us going forward will really limit us. She is now happy back at home with Ken’s brother Rick.
